Elemental Microanalysis
This analysis is normally performed for the following reasons:
- Proof of composition - It provides the answer to the question: "Is the empirical formula consistent with the structural hypothesis?"
- Proof of purity - It provides the answer to the question: "Is the sample sufficiently pure to provide elemental composition consistent with the theoretical formula andwithin the limits of tolerable error?" (Usually within ± 0.4% of the expected value)
Historically, many journals would not accept manuscripts for publication without a satisfactory elemental analysis.
